  • Why we love it!

We love the Calla because of its sculptural beauty and extreme comfort. Modern should be comfortable! Evoking the best of nature and industrial design, The Calla looks like a Gaudi sculpture inspired by a praying mantis. We’ve never seen a chair that looks anything like this sculptural masterpiece by William Sawaya.

Date 2001 | William Sawaya

An elegant, streamlined design mixed with a touch of humor and sensuality, the Calla Chair is a work of art made for everyday enjoyment, inside and out.

Whether he’s designing private homes, yachts, or commercial buildings, architect William Sawaya brings fluidity and innovation to everything he creates. He began his Calla Chair with a desire to build upon the injection molded, single material, monoblock stacking chair designed by Verner Panton 40 years earlier. Armed with new materials and technologies, Sawaya was able to make a chair that’s more sculptural, lightweight, and easier to produce than Panton’s masterpiece. It’s a chair inspired by the past and made for how we live today.

The Calla Chair was featured in the “Highlights from the Modern Design Collection: 1990 to the Present” exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Made in USA, this indoor-outdoor chair is stackable up to six high.
